The Acute Matte screens employ a trick (similar to the one used in the "cat's eye" reflectors used on roads, and "bright" projection screens) to direct more light towards the eye, instead of just scattering it in all directions, like normal focussing screens do.
The result however is a loss of contrast, a rather 'distorted' way of displaying the out of focus bits (regular screens show these more like they will actually show up on film), and some difficulty in seeing where exactly the image is (in diffusing focussing screens, it is there where the diffusion happens, i.e. on the matte surface of the screen. In Acute Matte screens it depends a bit on our eyes, where they happen to focus, too).
The Acute Matte-D screens are supposed, i believe, to address this issue. I think they scatter a bit more, providing a more positive of where the image is you're looking at. Plus they are supposed to have improved contrast.
